I turn 50 this month. I don’t know at what age you are considered ‘over the hill’ but I feel like I am at the top of the hill and I like the clarity from up here. That is not to say that I know everything; far from it actually. I don’t know how much I don’t know and I kind of like it that way. I am at home in the unknowing; embracing the mystery of life. Maybe that is what happens after 50 years of life experience. There is so much that doesn’t make sense, there is no way we are supposed to figure it all out. But for all I don’t know, there are some things I do know:
1. My body, mind and spirit thrive when I try new things. Sometimes that means doing old things in new ways. I would have never classified myself as a dancer, yet one of my fun things I do each week is Ashley’s Zumba class at the Shueyville Community Center. Zumba is dancing in an exercise sort of way which is new to me. Or is it exercising in a dancing sort of way, which is an old thing in a new way? Either way you look at it, I am creating new pathways in my brain as I move my body in new ways. I am getting stronger and more agile in different ways based on the way I am tasking my body. Sort of like yoga from a different end of the spectrum.
2. The less I care about other’s opinions of me, the more free I feel. Wow, how my life would be different if I would have realized that 40 years ago! When we are young, we don’t know to care what others think, then we hit 10 or so and little girls, especially, tend to think more about what others think of them, than what they think of themselves. I wonder how much drama and time I would have saved had I focused on finding freedom in who I am and what I believe, rather than focusing on other’s opinions.
3. The older I get the more I see connection in nearly everything. I see more clearly every day the common threads between diverse things. In healthcare and wellness, in religion, in education, in families. If the ego gets out of the way, what is left is a desire towards a common goal or unified mission. Seems so simple to me.
4. I love discovering new things and meeting new people! I guess that is what life is like outside of the box we tend to put ourselves in, especially as we age. I am glad to be out of the box.
